I recently ran a poll in my newsletter and Instagram stories on thyroid health.
From over 150 responses:
51% said you've got symptoms of hypothyroid
6% said hyperthyroid might be your issue
23% are checking one too many of the boxes in both 🤦
20% said you've got little to no symptoms of thyroid imbalance (yay!)
Quick ASSESSMENT: HOW’S YOUR THYROID HEALTH?
Hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid) looks like:
Weight gain
Sluggish-type fatigue
Low libido
Hair loss
Constipation
Puffiness
Intolerance to cold
Anemia
Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) on the other hand, looks like:
Weight loss
Burnout-type fatigue
Heart palpitations
Mood swings or panic attacks
Excess sweating
Insomnia
Excess bowel movements
Excess thirst
WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT?
From an Ayurvedic perspective, here's what you might want to consider.....
If you’re experiencing more than a few symptoms of Hypothyroidism, how often are you:
Since over half of respondents are experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism I made an 8-minute video about it…
Eating heavy, sugary foods?
Drinking ice water and other cold drinks?
Eating foods high in poor-quality fat?
Avoiding or skipping exercise, or living a pretty sedentary lifestyle?
Skipping opportunities to have sex? (with a partner or yourself)
Napping during the day?
Lacking mental activity (gapping out in front of the tv over doing something stimulating)
Avoiding confrontation (pretending everything is fine when it’s not).
These practices lead to KAPHA imbalance (excess heaviness, stagnancy), the subtle symptoms of which grow into diseases like Hypothyroidism, Hyperglycemia, type 2 diabetes, edema/chronic swelling, high cholesterol, and depression.
If you’re checking off more than a couple of the symptoms of hyperthyroid, consider how often you’re…
Excess fasting or skipping meals,
Eating dry food,
Overdoing it on exercise,
Holding in your pee, your farts/burps, your urge to sneeze,
Forcing yourself to stay awake,
Burning the candle at both ends (not resting),
Holding onto grief (not processing)
Carrying anger, judgment, criticism.
These practices cause PITTA imbalance (too much heat) in Ayurveda, and left unchecked, become the cause of diseases like Hyperthyroidism, Adrenal fatigue, inflammatory bowels/Crohn's disease, chronic migraines, and rage disorders.
Do you think, mayyyybe, that making a few changes to your diet and lifestyle will likely undo the problem?
That mayyybe... it could lead to un-doing the patterns that create chronic stress, inflammation, and nervous system dysregulation permanently, so you feel better for the rest of your life?
👆👆 This is REAL root cause medicine. 😘
It’s weird that we in Western Culture become so laser-focused on individual symptoms or diagnoses,
because everything is tied together.
Saying “my problem is all because of hypothyroidism” is kind of like saying “my hypothyroidism is all because of eating margarine”.
We have to take a bigger picture perspective. When you undo the patterns that got you here, you’ll find your map to breaking free.
